How we process brand learning.
Effectiveness has many different dimensions by which it can be measured.
Linear models based on awareness and persuasion are still the most prevalent amongst the communications community, even though there are now countless examples of campaigns that have been successful without finding it necessary to impact a rational, persuasive message.
Recent theories describe the success of such campaigns to their ability to influence consumers’ emotions, which in turn has encouraged the industry to adopt oversimplified tenets such as the idea that “linking” equates to “effectiveness”.
However, the sequence by which persuasion was achieved divided into two camps: those who continued to believe in the original approach of Learn-Fell-Do and a more enlightened group who embraced the approach Learn-Do-Feel.
The key is that behaviour influences attitudes and with low-importance purchases, making it often the case that judgement is suspended until the product has been tried, at which point any learning that has been acquired from advertising is accepted.
